The End (Why Writing Article Headlines LAST Often Leads To Great Headlines)

Yes. Writing article headlines LAST can have a dramatic effect NOT JUST on your articles but on your writing skills overall.

Let me explain.

We all know that the usual way of approaching an article is to focus on the headline first. Refine the headline. Sleep with the headline. Make the headline great. Make it so good that people would have to be nuts NOT to read your copy. We know that. By all means: start with a great headline!

What happens when you start your article with a headline: it forces you to SUBSTANTIATE.

See, once you write your headline (and after you've made it brilliant) all of your writing will have to EXPLAIN your position. You will be amassing an argument based on something you've already laid out. What follows after the headline, when you write the headline first, is PROOF. Your proof.

Which is completely fine. You just need to understand the 'kind' of writing you're doing.

But what if you changed that paradigm? What happens then? What if you just started writing about 'Irish Thatch Houses' and see where your own writing takes you?

When you free style, your writing you take off your restrictions of having to stay on the course you've already set. Your writing 'finds its way.' You will zig and zag, yes, but you will find traction and the article can and will take shape.

This is a writing exercise that surprises even the best of writers.

Writing this way will also make you a much more nimble writer because you won't constantly find yourself defining your premise with facts as you write. You'll be developing your thoughts. You'll allow more 'possibilities of thought' into your writing structure.

I encourage everyone to start writing article headlines last, at least as an exercise. Not always, of course, because you NEVER want to do anything always. Do you?
